MONSTER IN DA HOUSE!

Hey Pals,

Katie here today.  My brudder Butchy is sleeping.  We've had a few crazy days here at Mutton Hollow.  Most of you know that our Angel Snickers battled Idiopathic Epilepsy - having cluster seizures for several years, trying to keep that Evil Seizure Monster at bay and then the Evil Cancer Monster ended her life.  At that point, Mama was hoping she would never have to hear that word SEIZURE again!  Well............................

That EVIL SEIZURE MONSTER has reared it's ugly head again and returned to our house, bothering my poor brudder Butchy.  Yes, Butchy had a nasty seizure late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Needless to say Mama was devastated.  We just can't believe that evil thing has lured it's way into our lives again.  Our poor buddy Mango has been trying to keep the Seizure Monster at bay lately too.  Mango is surely big enough to beet the pulp out of that monster.

But the Seizure Monster is very sneaky and very evil.  He bothers so many of our pals.  We need to develop a special task force to invent a weapon to defeat this monster for good!

Angel Snickers had Hypothyroidism and so does Butchy.  There are more and more cases of dogs with Hypothyroidism also have seizures.  Just in one of the Yahoo groups that Mama belongs to, there are 6 wire fox terriers that have both conditions and we have heard of many more.  Angel Snickers was only 4 years old when her seizures started.  But Butchy is 10 1/2 years old and we were hoping he would never have them.

Butchy had extensive blood tests done yesterday and everything is fine.  So he probably just has the Idiopathic Epilepsy like Angel Snickers had, meaning they don't know what is causing the seizures.  OR, there is a chance of a brain tumor causing the seizures.  Usually these brain tumors advance very quickly, so seizures appear very frequent and most animals only live 6-12 months after being diagnosed with a tumor.

There is also a chance that Butchy may never have another seizure.  Every pet is different.  You never know when a seizure will occur.  So we're just in the wait and see pattern for now.  If Butchy would start to get more seizures, we track how often, the severity, if they are getting more severe etc. before deciding if he needs to start on seizure medications.  Mama never thought she would be starting another seizure diary.  Angel Snickers seizure diary was very large indeed.

We'll try to post some good seizure links in the next few days for those of you that want to learn more about seizures.  Some seizures are very small and some people don't even notice their pet is having one.

Time to go back to snuggling with my brudder.  I'm trying to keep him safe while he sleeps.  He has been very very tired since the seizure which is a common symptom.

NEW PHOTOS OF ZEEK

Hey Pals,

Our newest MANCAT Zeek is getting used to things around here. Mama was able to get some new photos of him with that flashy box thing.

Zeek came up to the loft and hopped into the largest cat tree the other day.

Peek - a - boo!!

He also has found one of Sylvester's favorite spots by one of the sunroom windows:

Next he hopped over to a rug to clean his tootsies:

Nom, nom, nom......

Getting sleepy now:

Nitey nite.....

Since we adopted Zeek, we don't know if he is just American Shorthair Tabby breed or if he is mixed.  Does anyone think he is mixed with the Russian Blue breed?

His hair is extremely thick, dense, short and shiny dark grey.  Very different from our other cats which are short and medium haired American Shorthair Tabbies.  If anyone has a good guess, please let us know.

BUGGING MAMA

Hey Pals,

Do you sit on your Mama or Papa and squish them?  Or continually beg them for goodies???

We sure do, hehehehe!  Each night when Mama lays down on the couch to sew or read a book and watch tv, we all try to lay on her legs and tummy.  She grabbed the camera to take a few pictures of us.  The kitties took off when they saw the camera.  Scuby and Ruby usually lay on Mama's tummy and Sylvester crawls up behind her head, licks her hair for a bit, then plops on top of her chest no matter what is there.  Sometimes it's sewing stuff, sometimes a book or magazine.  He doesn't care!

Katie and I Butchy usually lay on or beside her legs, almost pushing Mama off of the couch!

(Mama is holding the camera as high as she can to get a picture of us, her legs are under the bankie)

Hmmmmmm, I think it's time for a treat.....

Did you hear me Mama???

Ok, that's not working.  Here is my usual stare down:

And this:

Hehehe, that worked, now Katie is up barking for a goodie too!

And don't let the catsies fool you, they beg even worse then we do!  especially Hootie!!

10 DOG FOODS THAT MAY LEAD TO CANCER

Hey Pals,

As many of you know, we lost our Angel Snickers to the CANCER MONSTER just over a year ago.  Angel Snickers had Nasal Carcinoma, which is the most common type of cancer that affects the nasal cavity in dogs.

Mama is always reading up on things that may cause cancer in pets.  She tries to make the best choices for our health, including what foods we eat.  Our friends at Vet Tech posted this great article about 10 Dog Foods that May Lead to Cancer in pets and are allowing us to repost.  We thought this was worth posting so more pals could see this information.  There are many articles for viewing on their site at any time.  So be sure to visit their site often:  VET TECH ORG
************************************************
According to Dr. Carol, one out of every five pets is affected with cancer. In fact, she reports on an 80% increase in breast or mammary cancer and a 100% increase in prostate cancer. She attributes this to ineffective cancer treatments and lack of prevention of cancer.

According to Colorado State University, as many as 50% of pets die of cancer, making it a leading cause of pet death. With loads to worry about and treatments being insanely expensive, what can you do now to help prevent cancer in the future? Below, we have gathered ten dog foods that may lead to cancer to keep off of your next shopping trip. Many of these foods have also been known to cause illness in humans and are also a good choice to stay away from in all pet and people foods
.

1. Maple Syrup
Found in only one percent of dog food, this may not be a leading cause of cancer but it does feed cancer according to Natural News. The sugar found in it can also cause weight gain, arthritis, hyperactivity, and others. However, this blog entry does get top spots for being part of “Pet Food Ingredients Revealed!” Other shocking entries and cancer causing agents are revealed. Free to read online, you can check out ingredients listed from best to worst, used with the most frequency, and alphabetically.

2. BHT/BHA and Ethoxyquin
These are preservatives that are often used in pet foods to preserve fats and stabilize the entire product. Developed in 1950, Ethoxyquin has actually been shown to have similar properties to Agent Orange, a poison used during the Vietnam War. Humans who were working with it in the rubber industry reported a dramatic rise in such diseases as cancerous skin lesions, loss of hair, blindness, leukemia, fetal abnormalities, and chronic diarrhea. In animals, it has been linked to immune deficiency syndrome, spleen, stomach and liver cancer, along with the same diseases in humans.

3. Cancer Tissue
You read that correctly. According to Precious Pets, animals that have cancer often find themselves becoming part of the pet food industry. With different standards for pet food, many cows, chickens, and other farm animals that are diseased – possibly even with cancer – find themselves becoming part of the pet food chain. Tina Perry has much more on a behind the scenes look at commercial pet food.

4. Genetically Modified Organisms
Also bad for people, genetically engineered food can be bad for dogs. They are often used to accelerate the growth of many crops, including corn, which can find their way into dog food. It is far more difficult to trace these GMO’s in dog food, but there is this entry from Yesterday and Tomorrow. It lists the dangers of genetic engineering and even lists foods that are good for pets.

5. Aflatoxin
This substance is so toxic it actually gets recalled, although not in every state. The toxic chemical is a by-product made by certain types of mold. Although it cannot be read off pet foods that include ingredients on the package, ABC does include a list of recalled foods that recently occurred in seventeen states. Brand names included Pet Pride, Old Yeller, and Kroger Value.

6. Blue 1 and Blue 2
These artificial colorings are used in candy, beverages, and baked goods. They have also been found in pet food and have been known to cause brain tumors in mice, according to Six Wise. You can also view the entire list of 12 dangerous food additives that are bad for both people and pets.

7. Gluten
Did you know that certain people can be allergic to wheat? Keeping in the tradition of what is bad for people is bad for pets, certain dogs can also be allergic to it, leading to a host of unexplained symptoms. While no link to cancer has been drawn, if your pet is having trouble with their diets, gluten may be the reason. Check out this article from Doctor J, an expert in gluten sensitivity in both people and pets.

8. Glyphosate
A current popular agricultural pesticide is known as Roundup. One of its active ingredients is glyphosate, which is highly toxic. Dr. Carol is a holistic veterinarian and warns of the dangers of this pesticide in pet and people foods. DNA damage and permanent mutations are a concern of the veterinarian. She also includes loads of cancer preventing tips for animals which include diet, exercise, vaccinations, spaying, and visiting the vet.

9. Fluoride
That stuff that is supposed to be good for fighting cavities can actually be harmful to pets. The Pet Examiner reported on a study done by the Environmental Working Group on popular dog foods. They found that all the brands of dog food tested all were found to contain bone meal and animal byproducts. It is believed that these ingredients are the source of fluoride contamination. Excessive fluoride can lead to weakened bones and teeth and even cancer.

10. Grains
The Dog Cancer Diet is a site that specializes in help treating diagnosed pets with the best in nutrition. In this section, they recommend that dogs and pets stay away from grains. They did not evolve on grains – which include rice, wheat, and corn – and should not be treated as such. They recommend that owners look for the primary ingredient to be meat. While grains are allowed, they should be farther down the list.
If looking for more on pets and disease, there is more to be found than the above ten dog foods that may lead to cancer. Another good source of cancer information is the Animal Cancer Center. Part of Colorado State University, they are researching and investigating into cancer in animals. Visit to learn more, get treatment options, and even read information about clinical trials.

If looking to avoid the entire host of pet food perils, there are loads of resources on the internet for making your own. Both Allrecipes and Dogtime include loads of homemade recipes for pets, some of which can actually be made on both the cheap and healthy.

Be sure to click on the link for each item listed.  You will be taken to the site that has more information on each subject.  The Gluten link has a lot of good information.  Mama's sister-in-law has Celiac Disease which is from Gluten.  She has battled with this for many years and is finally feeling good, avoiding all gluten in the food she eats.

We hope this information will help you make better decisions on what your pets eat.

Have a great weekend!

SNOOZIN' BUDDIES

Hey Pals,

Zeek sure loves his new brudder Sylvester.  They like to snooze in the big chair together:

We're sure happy we adopted Zeek.

And of course my little sissie Katie likes to snooze with me:

But she also likes to snooze with Ruby:

We still have snow coming down here and it's very cold and windy.  Tomorrow is going to be even colder, so we'll probably be snoozin' most of the weekend.  Stay warm everyone!

DOG COLLAR REVIEW BY KATIE

Hey Pals,

It's me Katie blogging today.  I have a boootiful new collar to show you.  I was given the opportunity to pick out a lovely collar.  So I would like to tell you about it.

The collar is from Dog Collar Boutique.

I picked out the Sparkle Dog Collar by Marityn Dog company.  It comes in several colors, this one is the RUSTIC ROSE.  If you click on the photo you can biggify it to see the copper sparkles in the fabric.

I picked this style because it has the black side release nylon clasp and silver colored metal strap adjuster and D-ring AND it's made in New York City. Mama always likes us to have the collars with the plastic side release clasp.

You can even buy a matching leash.  The base of the collar is durable nylon webbing.

Doesn't it look pawfect with my fur colors???

We haven't washed the collar yet, but we're sure it's hand washable in cold-warm water like most collars.  So if you need a new collar, be sure to check out Dog Collar Boutique.  They have many eye catching styles to choose from.

Katie

NEW YEAR PAWTY PICS 2011

Hey Pals,

This is Captain Butcho reporting to you on our holiday adventure.

As many of you know, we flew to New Yawk in my purple plane with a few of our pals to celebrate New Year's Eve with Asta and Gussie in Asta's home.

Our pal Khyra has been BEGGING for some snow of her own.  SO..............................we decided to drop some by her house in Pawsylvania on the way to New Yawk.

Before we left home, we made a HOOOOOOOGE block of snow.

Then we loaded it into a hot air balloon basket so that we could carry it with my airplane.

When we flew over Khyra's house in Pawslyvania, we tipped the basket over so that the snow block could fall down into Khyra's yard.

Hehehehehehehe!  Hope you had fun with your snow Khyra!

When we got to New Yawk, we decided to fly around the town a bit, we had a blast!

You can visit Asta's blog to see what happened when we arrived there!

When we were all settled into Asta's house, we all got into our jammies for the giant slumber pawty that lasted all night long!

( Katie, Asta & Lacie )
