WE HATE ICE!

Hey Pals,
Well we're having another ice & snow storm here tonight. What a bummer...... This ice stuff is getting really old now. We can't even really play outside cause it's too slippery. So we just sit around the house snoozing, or wrestling, or playing with toys. See me Butchy, Mama won't even let me take a nap without getting that darn camera out:
Maaaaaa, put that stoopid thing away, I'm trying to get some beauty sleep.

Snickers likes to beg for treats all day long! Look at her pathetic face:
Pweeeease Mama, can't I have another treat????

Well guess what came to the door today? The UPS man with more doggie treats! Yep, Mama ordered us some with our shampoo. These are made by the same company that makes our doggie food, Solid Gold.
See the green box is called Dragon's Teeth! They are shaped like giant teeth, hehehehehe! They have stuff in them to help our breath smell fresh too. They sure taste yummy! Tonight Mama is going to order us some of those really big bully sticks just like our pal Liberty has. Have you seen her blog? Here is her pic:
Isn't she adorable? We have made her our Honorary WFT too! Be sure to click on her name above to visit her blog.

We also have another new pal and his name is Jasper! He is a toy poodle that was rescued by his new family. Here he is sitting amongst the clover:
He is so cute and such a fashion hound too. His Mama even ordered him some clothes from our Mama that match what I Butchy have. We can be twins, hehehehe! So please visit his blog also by clicking his name above.

Hmmmm, I hear Snickers begging for more treats, think I better go see what's up.

WE'RE ALIVE & WELL!

Hey Pals,
We're back! Finally just got our phone lines, internet, electricity & satelite back on late this afternoon. Man are we lucky. We live in between Denver & Janesville, and both of those towns still do not have electricity at all. So 2 of our cousin's families & a friend's family do not have any power. They all went out to buy generators today. One of the roads just south of us is closed for a mile because all of the utility poles snapped off in half and are laying on the roads & ditches and wires are everywhere! We have lots of trees down in our yard and tons of branches. On Saturday night when the worst part of the storm hit, the wind was blowing branches so hard that they kept hitting our windows. Mama thought one of the skylights broke, but it didn't. The ice was about 5 inches thick on everything. Even the steps going out the back door. Our back porch has only 3 steps, but it was almost impossible for Mama to get down them with one of us to take us potty. She had to wrap her arms around the railings and crawl down the 3 steps while carrying us. Can you imagine that? hehehehe! Mama was so afraid we were going to break our legs just trying to walk to potty. It's a good thing Mama hadn't trimmed our nails for 2 weeks. We looked like cats stretching our claws out to grab onto the ice. We sure didn't like it out there one bit either. Then by Sunday we had about 7-8 inches of snow on top of all of that ice. We even got another inch of snow today. Is it ever going to stop? At least with the snow on the ice we can walk much better. We had to go around the whole acreage checking & sniffing things out today. Papa says there are so many branches down it would take him an entire month to pick them all up. Late yesterday it warmed up to about 30 degrees and the ice was melting from the trees. So then the icicle storm started. Yep, ice & branches would fall continuously from all of our trees. So we couldn't go near the trees at all. Mama said the ice could pierce right through us if it hit us. Here are a few pictures of down branches and a broken off tree. There are tons more, but Mama didn't take pictures of everything:

We hope all of our pals that also were hit by the storm are ok. Please let us know!

PS Mama was so proud of me Butchy cause we had terrible thunder during the ice storm and I wasn't even scared!

More Valentines! & National Pet Dental Health Month

Hey Pals,
Check out our cute Valentine cards & Happy New Year card from our Hamsterrier pal Fufu:

Fufu is such a thoughtful hamsterrier. Thank you so much Fufu! If you have never been to his blog, please go visit him and his brother Bibi at: Fu fu the hamster

Did you know that it is National Pet Dental Health Month???

Dental Health Care for Your Companion

by Dr. Larry Siegler

Dental hygiene is one of the most important aspects of pet care. Many guardians go to great lengths to provide the best foods, tasty treats, and fun toys, but forget about their companions’ mouths. Keeping your dog or cat’s teeth and gums healthy will go a long way to preventing not only bad breath, periodontal disease, and an uncomfortable or even painful mouth, but also more serious chronic conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, heart conditions and joint problems.

A healthy canine or feline mouth is teaming with bacteria – most of which are normal and natural. It is important to control plaque buildup in order to ensure most of this bacteria are healthy bacteria. Plaque is a mixture of bacteria, saliva components, and remnants of epithelial cells and white blood cells along with some broken down food particles. It is sticky and should be removed from the teeth daily. When not removed plaque becomes tartar (or calculus) as mineral deposits and organic material build up and harden on the teeth. Tartar generally looks like a yellow-brown layer on the teeth near the gum line.

As plaque and tartar build on the teeth, the balance of healthy bacteria is thrown off and the opportunity for disease arises. As the tartar builds up under the gums they become inflamed and sore. Slowly the gums begin to separate from the teeth and recede. Plaque builds even more rapidly in the upper, softer part of the teeth and infection begins. In cats, cavities develop with even more opportunity for infection. (Dogs are less prone to cavities). The bacteria and toxins are absorbed into the blood stream where they circulate and begin to build in kidney, liver, and heart tissue. The toxins released can even affect brain tissue. The inflammatory process involved can aggravate deteriorating joints.

Sound scary? It’s also painful. But it is preventable. Plaque builds up on your dog’s or cat’s teeth every day. Just as you brush your teeth every day, so should your companion – of course, since they don’t have opposable thumbs, you’ll have to have to help them out. A combination of teeth brushing and healthy chew “treats” will go a long way to maintaining your companion’s overall health and extending their life expectancy. Purebred cats and smaller breeds of dogs are more susceptible to periodontal disease, but the reason is not yet known.

Steps to prevention of periodontal disease:

Daily Brushing - Daily brushing is important - at a minimum every other day if your pet is also getting good dental exercise. If you’ve never brushed your companion’s teeth before, go SLOWLY. First get them accustomed to letting you look in their mouth a bit, then just massage the gums with your finger a little, eventually brush one or two teeth, and keep working day by day until you can brush the whole mouth. Plaque tends to build most on the upper teeth, so be sure to focus some time there. Be patient – it may take over a month to get them used to it. It is TIME WELL SPENT.

Healthy Diet - You guessed it – a healthy diet is important for dental health too. The healthier the animal, the better the immune system. A meat based diet is essential as meat helps maintain a healthier mouth environment.

Exercise - No, not a daily walk around the block – dental exercise. Chewing on hard food such as raw bones and treats such as tendons, bully sticks or other dental chews helps exercise the teeth and gums and even helps scrape off plaque, helping to prevent tartar buildup. I like chicken necks for smaller animals and turkey necks for larger breed dogs. (Remember – poultry bones do not splinter when raw.) Some guardians provide knuckle bones or oxtails for healthy chewing exercise.

I can always tell those dogs that are given plenty of raw bones because they rarely need a dental cleaning. For those that do not want to go the raw bone route, there is a wide array of chews and dental “treats” available, I recommend you let your companion sample a few and find his favorites. Greenies are ever-popular dental chews and can be very effective – just a couple words of caution: if your companion has allergies you may want to avoid greenies as they are mostly wheat gluten. Also, they are high in calories, so not the best treat for overweight animals. I often recommend tendon chews and bully sticks.

A note about dry kibble and “crunchy” treats: Crunching kibble and dog biscuits does not qualify as dental exercise nor does it remove plaque from the teeth. Eating kibble and biscuits generally leaves behind small bits of food material that easily stick to the teeth and contribute to plaque buildup. (Those commercials that showed the dog eating a bone-shaped biscuit followed by a big smile with sparkling white teeth were convincing – but fantasy).

Mouth Wash, Drops, Supplements - Mouth washes, drops, and diet or water supplements are a great tool in the prevention of periodontal disease when combined with brushing. They are definitely not as effective as brushing, but are certainly better than no home care.

Check Ups - Regular check ups are important – especially for the older animal. You can perform your own examination monthly. If you smell any foul odor, see any redness in the gums or a lot of tartar buildup on the teeth, then seek the help of a veterinarian. If caught early enough, it is possible to scrape the tartar off of some animals’ teeth without general anesthesia. Supplementing with Vitamin C and CoEnzyme Q10 can help promote the health and healing of gum tissue as well.

Dental Procedures - If your veterinarian finds more advanced periodontal disease, consider the overall benefits of having a dental procedure performed. Your companion will definitely benefit from a healthier and much more comfortable mouth. For a very old or unhealthy animal, blood tests should be performed to determine if they are well enough to undergo anesthesia.

Home dental care can be the best gift you can give your companion. It requires a little more time on your part, but goes such a long way to preventing disease and discomfort that it is quite well worth it. Considering the cost and stress involved for your companion of a dental procedure by a veterinarian, it is a very wise investment.

So pals, do your Mama & Papa's brush your teeth? If not, please beg them to start now. Our Mama does our teeth and it's really not so bad. See my pearly whites???

WE WON A BLOG AWARD!

Hey Pals,
We're so excited today. We found out that we won the I-Love-Dogs 'Good Dog Site Webmaster Award'! Woof, woof, woof! Check out our award in our sidebar to the right of the screen by our Dogs With Blogs 'Awesome Blog Award'. We'd also like to take this time to thank all of our friends that visit our page!

We had another shock today, it's actually 39 degrees! That is about 60 degrees warmer than it has been for the last 2-3 weeks. The sun is out and the snow is melting. So we've been able to go outside on lots of walkies with Mama today. The snow is still too deep in some areas of the acreage, so we stay away from those parts. The snow is all soft & mushy now so Snickers was having a ball burying her face down into the snow sniffing for mousies, hehehehe! Snickers even saw a mousie outside last night. She was doing her 50th circle trying to pick a poo spot and she saw the mousie run by the house. So of course she didn't do her poo, made Mama mad. Snickers was just too bent on finding that mousie. She didn't even care that she was out there to go poo.

We forgot to post this picture of Snickers wearing fleece booties that Mama makes to sell. She listed 3 sizes in the pink the other night on her Snitchybug Dog Designs auction page. You can custom order sizes & colors too.
We wanted to tell you about our new wirey pal Jackson! He is a wire fox terrier just like us and he just started his very own blog called Jackson's World. He lives in the UK with his Mama & Papa, so please visit his blog and give him a paw comment! He would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Another card & Toto got his first bath!

Hey Pals,
Snickers received another cute Valentine card and it's from Scrappy! Her heart throb from Australia.

Scrappy has lots of girlfriends all over the world. He is just so adorable, what girl doggie could resist him? Thank you Scrappy!!! Muah! from Snickers

Mama went to Auntie Carol's house yesterday and guess what?? She groomed Toto's ears & rear, (hehehehe!) and he even got his first bath! Check out his pictures:

LOOK AT ME, I'M ALL CLEAN NOW!

I'M GETTING SLEEPY, I THINK I'LL TAKE A NAP!
ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
Toto actually did fall asleep while Mama was trimming one of his ears. We think the following video of him shows why he was so sleepy, he wore himself out playing with his favorite toy:

Mama says Toto has the true Terrier Spirit & Personality!
We've had many pals asking if Toto is going to have his own blog. Well Auntie C doesn't think she can learn how to blog, (plus her digital camera died & she hasn't gotten a new one yet) so we set Toto up as a doggie that can blog on our blog page. So from time to time Toto will blog and keep you up to date on his puppyhood. We did teach him how to leave comments so you might see him stop by your blog soon.
We also wanted to say:
HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!
to all of our pals that celebrate this holiday in their country. Have a great time!

Meet TOTO, our new cousin!

Hey Pals,
Meet our new cousin named TOTO! He is a Yorkshire Terrier. Mama found a nice lady that had some very nice puppies for sale in town here for Auntie Carol to go check out. So Friday night they went and looked at them and bought little TOTO! Isn't he so adorable??

I AM TOTO TERRIER, HEAR ME ROAR!!!

We can hardly wait to meet him ourselves. We have to wait until Toto has all of his puppy shots. He has had some already, but not all of them. Our Mama gave him his first nail clipping & ear hair cutting today. He was such a good boy too. Mama will be the one that gives him his haircuts. Toto doesn't like being outside too well yet, but do you blame him when it is so cold?? Tonight he will see fresh snow falling. Yep, we are getting more dang snow. We might get up to 5 more inches of that fluffy stuff. Will this ever end??
Well it's time for me Butchy to have my hair stripped for the week. Guess we'll sign off for now.
Nite nite Toto!!
Wirey Hugs!
